The National Prayer Breakfast is a yearly event held on the first Thursday of February each year In Washington. This Year it falls on February 2nd, oddly coinciding with groundhog day, let that sink in for a moment. I wonder who will show up for such an event, possibly Tony Perkins, Tim Wildmon,or Mat Staver? All three of these white men are leaders of hate groups as specified by the SPLC. Respectively they lead the Family Research Council, The American Family Association and the Liberty Council. I can hardly wait to see what the compassionate christians come up with next to make our secular nation a better place.
Rumors circulated earlier this week that President Trump would repeal an executive order by President Obama that gave a growing segment of society some basic rights that are enjoyed by my white christian heterosexual counterparts. For those of you that do not know, this EO granted roughly 20% of society some basic rights. The EO goes as thus, the federal government or any organizition that has federal contracts must not discriminate against anyone seeking employment, housing or services from said organizations based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This horrific EO resulted in all holy hell breaking loose. Evangelicals everywhere voted overwhelmingly for President Trump in hopes of getting this and other basic rights that those of privilige hold dear overturned for others. In the closing days of the campaign (then) Mr. Trump made statements often in the form of questions referring to overturning all of President Obama’s EO’s resulting in tumultuous cheers and donations from those who revel in a history of repressing women, minorities and basically anyone that is not like them.
Struggling with rumors and unfounded conclusions, I draw the conclusion that my opinion is justified. This week set up the perfect storm for the revocation of the rights of American Citizens. Until now President Trump has enraged his opponents by acting on “dog whistle” issues that the moral majority hold dear without actually affecting the rights of Americans. I have the sense that he is throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. He has went after a religious sect by temporarily banning travel from seven countries that do not worship the same messiah as the moral majority. He has reinstituted the so called Gag rule referring to the banning of tax payer money being spent on womens reproductive rights in foreign countries. While enraging liberals in this shock attack on human rights i feel the worst is yet to come.
This week the White House refuted rumors that the Executive Order would be overturned, while sceptical I was cautiously optimistic that the President did not have the intestinal fortitude to attack LGBT Americans, many of us fought for the right for evangelicals to hate us. I was aware of the impending prayer breakfast knowing full well that it was a prime opportunity for those that peddle hate disguised as religion to call in their IOU’s for delivering the evangelical vote. Looking at the events of this week I am growing more convinced that there will be an assault on civil rights in mere hours.
1.White House denies revocation of President Obama’s executive order repeatedly as if they are hiding something.
2.Prayer Breakfast scheduled for Thursday, many LGBT rights opponents will be in attendance.
3.Presidential staff bragging about keeping his promises.
4.President Trump originally planned to sneak off to a Harley Davidson plant in Milwaukee to sign more edicts on Thursday immediately after the breakfast (possibly to alter the news cycle) essentially giving the media something else to focus on.
5.The President retreating to his Estate in Florida immediately after the Executive Orders of the day, ostensibly to take a break, (hide from the media) and leave his staff to clean up the mess.
6. Rumors of something brewing on the Civil Rights front from unnamed sources within the White House.
Seeing the confluence of these independent, but related tidbits made my hair stand up. We know the agenda but we have to remain non bias so as to not jump to conclusions despite the distrust that we have in this administration. Yesterday an investigative reporter that seems credulous wrote a piece for another credulous publication that exposed a draft of a “Religious Freedom” Executive Order obtained from the White House. The draft explicitly says that,
“Section 1. Policy. The United States Constitution enshrines and protects the fundamental natural right to religious liberty. This Constitutional protection ensures that Americans and their religious organizations will not be coerced by the Federal Government into participating in activities that violate their consciences, and will remain free to express their viewpoints without suffering adverse treatment from the Federal Government. It shall be the policy of this Administration to protect religious freedom.”
Thank you for your vote evangelicals consider the debt paid. Those that have privilige will not recognize that this order, if signed not only legalizes discrimination, it encourages it. The phrase “consciences” is terrifying, the ramifications of such an order are unimaginable.
This was written hastily and I could be wrong (I hope I am). The anger from the right is so vile that they want retribution for marriage equality, I for one think that they will stop at nothing. The breakfast is a couple hours from now, watching with bated breath and cherishing my civil rights that may be revoked soon.
